Taiwan Explained: Why China Claims It, and Why the U S. Is Involved Council on Foreign Relations
In Taiwan, which has its own democratically elected government and is home to approximately twenty-three million jetwin in bangladesh people, political leaders have differing views on the island’s status and relations with the mainland. Despite the deep mistrust many Taiwanese have of the communist Chinese government, most locals bear little to no animosity towards individual mainland Chinese visitors. Communist China shells the Nationalist-controlled islands of Kinmen or Quemoy and the Matsu Islands to probe the extent of the US support for Taiwan.

Citizens of Germany, Australia, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Ireland and Canada aged 18–30 can apply for a working holiday visa. The government tends to waver from being very lax on this issue under one administration to suddenly taking action under the next, but it only takes one disgruntled student to report you and have you fined and deported. With provinces non-functional, Taiwan is in practice divided into 22 subnational divisions, each with a self-governing body led by an elected leader and a legislative body with elected members. The ROC is, de jure constitutionally, divided into provinces zh, special municipalities (which are further divided into districts for local administration), and the province-level Tibet Area. According to the 1947 constitution, the territory of the ROC is according to its « existing national boundaries ». In 2012 the Mainland Affairs Council issued a statement clarifying that Outer Mongolia was not part of the ROC’s national territory in 1947.
Taiwan had long been a major centre of Chinese pop culture, but this has diminished significantly since the 2010s, as most of the top Taiwanese singers and actors have relocated to mainland China where they can make a lot more money. Glove puppet shows (布袋戲) originated in Fujian province on mainland China, and were brought to Taiwan by the first Han Chinese immigrants. Mahjong in Taiwan is mostly a family and friends affair, and is usually played at social gatherings in people’s houses. In international sporting competitions, such as the Olympic Games, Taiwan is called « Chinese Taipei » (中華臺北) for political reasons.
